Haiti Water Purification Missions

What are you doing this weekend?
How would you like to fly to Haiti and help 10,000 people?

… Saving lives in a post-disaster Haiti

After our massive relief effort to Haiti was scaled back in the spring of 2010, those of us involved in Bahamas Habitat felt sure there were additional ways that we could and should use the resources of planes and pilots entrusted to us.

We sought out ways to base aircraft in country to facilitate continued deliveries of vital supplies. We explored a number of different avenues to apply the best use of our resources and volunteers. We wanted to continue to be of help and we wanted our efforts to pay significant dividends. After much research, trial and error, we found what we consider to be the ideal way to leverage our resources for maximum good and benefit to those we sought to serve in Haiti.

The number one challenge in Haiti in many areas is the lack of disease free drinking water. Even before the earthquake Haiti ranked near the bottom of nations for drinking water. The situation after the earthquake was dire and the effort to build any appropriate infrastructure for clean drinking water has been no where on the horizon.

Just before the outbreak of the deadly Cholera epidemic in the fall of 2010 Bahamas Habitat launch water purification missions via a partnership with Servants in Faith and Technology (SIFAT) to deliver and install sustainable technology water purification system in Haiti. Our initial efforts were very promising.

In fact, in less than 4 days with one plane, a trained installer and the expertise of the folks from SIFAT, our teams were able to deliver disease free drinking water to 20,000+ people. This was the type of impact we were hoping to deliver. In fact, Our work was immediately recognized by organizations involved.

From those initial efforts Bahamas Habitat committed to continue these missions to Haiti for a week every month in 2011. Each mission would focus on delivering a SIFAT trained installer technician along with the water purification equipment to the outlying areas that were in need. A key piece of the puzzle is the ground work that SIFAT does to establish sustainable connections to appropriate local community leaders. This approach ensures the technology delivered will be used on an ongoing basis and the people will receive the disease free drinking water.

Our partnership with this organization is ideal as Bahamas Habitat strives to serve the spectrum of disaster response, from immediate response in times of disaster to long-term sustainable development by supplying on-the-ground efforts ideally inspired by local leadership.
